Before a busy season, review the care instructions for the appliances you use most. A short check can help you notice an existing problem before guests arrive or laundry piles up. It cannot guarantee a breakdown-free summer.
Refrigerator and freezer
Check that doors close fully, visible seals are clean and required clearances are maintained. Follow the model’s instructions for accessible cleaning and temperature settings. Do not assume every refrigerator has coils that a homeowner should expose or clean. Persistent cooling problems belong on a refrigerator service request.
Dryer
Clean the lint screen according to the manual. Longer drying times or restricted exhaust airflow need attention. Do not pull a connected gas dryer away from the wall as a casual cleaning step. Arrange suitable assistance if moving the appliance or accessing the exhaust requires it. See dryer repair.
Washer and dishwasher
Use the manufacturer’s cleaning cycle, product and instructions. Clean removable filters or dispensers only where the manual describes them as user-accessible. Avoid improvised mixtures or assuming a filter is removable on every model. Check visible areas for leakage without disturbing water or electrical connections.
Oven, cooktop and microwave
Clean cooled surfaces with products approved for the model. Follow the oven’s instructions before selecting a self-cleaning cycle. Do not enlarge gas burner openings, adjust gas components or open a microwave cabinet. If a door, control or heating function seems faulty, request service.
Make a seasonal checklist
Save the manuals and model numbers; record the tasks completed and any recurring error. Complete ordinary cleaning before a planned event so you have time to address a fault. Read our regular appliance maintenance guide and DIY checks versus professional repair for the distinction between care and repair.
For dryer care, the CPSC dryer safety guidance explains the importance of lint and exhaust maintenance. Your model’s manual remains the starting point.
